Colour and Music
As an alumnus of the post-graduate study at the ‚Institute of music theory and principles of harmony, Vienna’ , Nobuko Akiyama has been dealing for years with the interplay between visual perception and musical perception, the so called ‚Synesthesia’. She is especially interested in the relationship between color and the harmonies of music.
She attended the congress ‚Symmetry: Art and Science – 8th Congress and exhibition of ISIS’ in Gmünd (Austria) in August 2010, as a member of Prof. Dr. Schulze’s work group. The special interpretation of Skriabin’s music and his/its relationship to color was a main topic there.

Die Stadt Wien, ein G-Dur-Akkord und die Zahl Sechs – für Nobuko Akiyama gibt es etwas, das all das verbindet: Ihre Lieblingsfarbe. Grün. Ganz besonders stark sind ihre Synästhesien bei Musik. „Als Kind habe ich alle Musikstücke auf G-Dur transponiert“, erinnert sich die Pianistin und Klavierpädagogin. Dieses „Umfärben“ habe ihr großen Spaß gemacht und ihr tiefe Zufriedenheit bereitet. Aber nicht nur bestimmte Akkorde oder Töne sind für Akiyama eng mit Farben verbunden. Jede Art von Musik hat für sie immer auch Farbe und Form. „Es beginnt grau“, sagt die Musikerin, während sie die ersten Noten von Prélude in e-Moll von Frédéric Chopin spielt. „Jetzt vermischt es sich mit dem c, wird rot, dann dominiert das graue h wieder…“ Die Musik fließt dabei von links nach rechts, ähnlich einem vielschichtigen, bunten Farbstrom voller Wirbel und Wellen.

Wer Farben “hört” oder Klänge “sieht”, galt früher als “krank”. Heute sind synästhetische Fähigkeiten interessant für die Hirnforschung und für Künstlerinnen und Künstler Inspirationsquelle.
“Synästhetiker” fühlen sich dadurch ernstgenommen und wagen zunehmend den Schritt in die Öffentlichkeit. Im Film berichten sie unter anderem von farbig wahrgenommenen Buchstaben oder von diversen Geruchs- und Tasterlebnissen.
